Thinking about identity
Members who attended the session were encouraged to explore their own individual identities through an exercise where they had to complete sentences beginning with phrases such as”I am”, “I am not”, ” I have” and “I have not”, plotting them on an identity mind map where they wrote the first thing that came to mind.
The discussion then moved on to the idea of having multiple identities, for example one identity where you can feel open to share and another where you feel forced to hide aspects of yourself. They also talked about the idea of conflicting identities such as being a successful mother at the same time as being a student.
This provoked a session around group identity and what the identity of the adults group at Body & Soul is. The group went back through their statements and changed them to “we are”, “we like”, “we have”, “we remember” and “we can” to define a positive group identity, adding their thoughts together into one diamond grid.
